Finding a job in Spain

The lucky few secure full time employment in advance of their arrival in Spain by using a recruitment agency. But the vast majority pitch up with a van load of their worldly goods, enough savings to tide them over for a few months and high hopes of finding work and a better life. Most discover the hard way that finding any kind of work (never mind interesting, well paid work) is far tougher than they imagined. This choice is purely your own as it is definately easier to get a job in Spain when you can see potential employers face to face but if you come all the way down and run out of money it makes for a painful drive back!

You're off to a good start if you're an EU citizen because you can work in Spain without a work permit and without having to apply for "residencia". Plenty of young Americans and Australians find their hopes of teaching English as a foreign language in Spain are dashed by intense competition from young Brits who don't have to overcome the same bureaucratic hurdles.

Generally speaking, wages are far lower in Spain compared with the UK and most other countries in northern Europe but then the cost of living can certainly be lower.

If you take a job in Spain, make sure you get an official work contract from your employer. Read it carefully and/or have it translated. Remember that you can be given a temporary contract that only lasts 3/6/9 months. After these contracts, an employer has to give you a long-term contract in order to keep you on. He cannot therefore continue giving you short-term contracts. Don't be tempted to take cash work for if you are caught you will be sent home. Anyone caught employing people without a contract will be fined immediately.

Many people come to Spain to set up their own business. This can be a complicated process and there are many pitfalls. One option that is very popular is to buy a bar in Spain. Thousands have already done just this and the flood of people continues.

Illegal working thrives through out jobs in Spain where it has been estimated that the turnover of the black economy equals around 25% of the official GNP and real unemployment is at least 10% less than the official figure. Many unscrupulous employers use illegal labour in order to avoid the high social security contributions and pay low wages for long hours and poor working conditions. Heavy fines are often imposed when offenders (employer and employee) are prosecuted - so be warned!
