Spanish Unemployment Figures 2010
Unemployment rose by 0.1% in February in both the Eurozone and across the 27 member nations, taking it to 10% and 9.6% respectively, whilst reaching 19% in Spain, according to the EU statistical office, Eurostat, in a statement today. Gibraltar has a reported unemployment rate of 3%.
Although the increase is small, the unemployment figures are the highest recorded since August 1998 for the Eurozone and the highest since January 2000 across the EU as a whole.
The small increase in unemployment breaks a spell in which it had remained constant in the Eurozone (at 9.9% since November last year) and confirms the upward trend across the EU as a whole, where it jumped 0.1% after three months of being stable.
Over the past twelve months, unemployment in Spain has risen by 2.3%, from 16.7% recorded in February last year.
In the EU in February there were 23.01 million men and women of working age out of work, 3.1 million more than the same month in 2009, and 15.7 million people in the Eurozone, 1.8 million more than in February last year, according to Eurostat data.
Between January and February alone, the number of unemployed rose by 131,000 across the EU as a whole and by 61,000 in the Eurozone.
According to figures released today, Spain remains the country with the second highest unemployment figures, behind Latvia, with 21.7% unemployed.
At the other end of the table are the Netherlands with 4% unemployment and Austria with 5%.
All member states with available data showed annual increases in unemployment in February.
The smallest increases were recorded in Luxembourg (from 5.4% to 5.5%), Germany (from 7.3% to 7.5%) and Belgium (from 7.7% to 8%).
The largest increases occurred in Latvia (from 13.2% to 21.7%), Estonia (from 7.6% to 15.5% between the last quarter of 2008 and the same period in 2009) and Lithuania (8.1% to 15.8%, also according to quarterly data).
