Gibraltar Frontier Fracas

Wielding batons and firing their guns into the air, armed Spanish riot police clashed with La Linea protestors near the frontier yesterday.

The protestors were again out in the streets demanding that the La Linea town council paid them their wages, which they have not received since October. The November wages are now also due.

Although a deal has been struck with a bank to loan them the money due, the municipality is still awaiting the outcome.

With no cash in their pockets, the municipal workers decided to stage another demonstration. About 150 of them gathered near the conference centre and from there they planned to march to the round-about beyond the right-hand turn when leaving the aduana.

But their protest march was interrupted by riot police brought over from Seville. Possibly thinking the protestors were going to block access to the frontier, the police charged against them with batons raised and firing their guns into the air.

The representative of the UGT union, Jose Porras, said they were in the area authorised for their protest when the police charged. He reckons they charged against them as soon as they saw them.

Porras and others ended up in hospital suffering from injuries. An ambulance was seen taking an old lady to hospital as well.

Later, Porras called for the resignation or dismissal of the Spanish government delegate for the Cadiz province Sebastian Saucedo.

Through a loud-hailer the UGT man shouted: This is like Franco's police.

Around six protestors were said to have ended up in hospital, said Porras, himself sporting a broken finger.
